Rising above the eastern ridge of Himalaya, Ama Dablam (6812 m asl) looks undeniably beautiful and renders a picturesque view of other ranges from the top. The name of this mountain means ‘Mother Necklace’, which befits its appearance. When viewed from a distance, the peak looks exactly like a mother holding a baby on open palms (long ridges by the sides) and the hanging glacier appears much the same as a necklace (Dablam, worn by Sherpas). This mountain looks no less heavenly.
The Ama Dablam Base Camp trek is loved by adventure junkies from around the globe because of its extreme height (almost perpendicular). As you make your way up to the base camp, you will see the spectacular view of other fellow ranges behind the level of your eye. This trek takes you along the ancient trading route of Namche alongside the rhododendron woodlands and lush forests. The hike to Khumjung and Khunde gives insight into the Buddhist culture and lifestyle. How they make their living in such a harsh environment will surely keep you in awe. At the end of the day, you will realize that the whole trip became incredibly awesome not just because of the mountains, but with the colorful chortens, marvelous Gompas, and prayer flags turning into the air all the time.
Once you arrive in Nepal, one of our representatives will meet you at the exit point of the airport. He will guide you through the winding streets of Kathmandu to your hotel and then, help you familiarize yourself with the cultures and customs of Nepal. If you felt like strolling around then, be sure to taste the incredible Momos (dumplings) of Nepal (offered in varieties of fillings).
The best times to explore the historical sites in Kathmandu are the early morning when the sun just wakes up, and the late afternoon, when the sun tends to sleep down the horizon. At these two times, the historical structures of Kathmandu are lively and more beautiful than at any other part of the day. Because of time limitations, we will only be able to explore 4 of the 7 UNESCO listed cultural heritage sites in Kathmandu. But, if you wish to visit other sites as well then, we can extend a day more in your itinerary for further sightseeing.
Catch the earliest possible flight to Lukla Airport in one of the shortest runways in the world. This flight takes you about 25-45 minutes, but each moment in the air is filled with adventure. The lush hills and incredibly white snowy mountains create a pleasant atmosphere. Upon landing, we will start on our half-day trek to Phakding.
For the first couple of hours, the trail passes through the quaint Sherpa settlements and farm fields until arriving at the wonderful village of Choplung. The trail then descends to Ghat. But, just before reaching there, the spectacular peak of Kusum Kanguru rewards us with its incredible outlook. Within a short while, we will be in our lodge at Phakding.
Because of the altitude and terrain, the trek to Namche becomes more demanding, both physically and mentally. However, each moment is worth stepping into.
We will cross a suspension bridge that shows the way ahead to Toctoc, where a wonderful waterfall surprises us with its unique appearance. Within a couple of minutes, another waterfall rewards us with its furious water flow at Bengkar. From there, the trail continues to the Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO-listed natural heritage site. In this forest, the rumors of encountering the red panda may exaggerate your expectations from the walk, but these are very rare. A beautiful Kani Gate welcomes you to the village of Namche.
Namche is a perfect spot for acclimatization. The souvenir stalls and the handicraft vendors in the marketplace of Namche have all the reasons to startle you. Plus, it is best to take a few hours extra to explore the museums and monasteries of Namche. For a side trip, hike to the Khumjung and Khunde. While Khumjung is popular for its classic monastery, Khunde has the historical Hillary Hospital, founded by Sir Edmund Hillary. Both of these places are rustic in appearance but rich in cultures and rituals.
To reach Pangboche, you will have to travel a long way through the Phortse. But, once you reach there, the views are all yours. On the way to Phortse, a large overhanging rock, lingering by the side of the hill, offers the best views of the mountains, especially the Ama Dablam peak on the eastern skyline. Further ahead, the quaint Sherpa settlements and Buddhist monasteries flavor your journey. Upon arriving at the Pangboche, explore the well-made monastery on the north of the main settlement.
The hike to the Ama Dablam Base camp is not going to be an easy one as the more you proceed, the steeper the trail becomes. For the first couple of hours, the trail follows a zigzag route, but once it starts ascending along the steep bluffs, the views of the Dingboche and the surrounding peaks of Nuptse and Lhotse appear spectacular. It is a tough ascend to the Base camp. Once you are there, descend back to Pangboche. The descent is much easier than the ascent.
From Pangboche, we will retrace the steps back to the Namche for the overnight stay. You may as well choose the alternative route via the Tengboche if you want to explore more of the Everest Region. Upon arriving at Namche, visit the places that you have missed in the early days.
The trail to Lukla descends from the Namche through the Sagarmatha National Park to Phakding and finally Namche. Although the surroundings appear familiar, the waterfalls and mountains still appear astonishing.
Catch the earliest possible flight to Kathmandu and feel the thrill of the amazing mountains and ridges.
Finally, the time has come to return home. But, if you like to stay more in Nepal and try out other adventures, then we are ready to assist you. Otherwise, we will drop you to the airport and give you a warm farewell.
During busy trekking seasons (March, April, May, October, and November), there is increased air traffic at Kathmandu airport. To address this, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal made a change for all flights to Lukla. Now, instead of flying from Kathmandu, you need to travel by road to Manthali airport in Ramechhap district, which takes about 4 to 5 hours. From there, you can catch a flight to Lukla. Please note that any new updates will be shared with you promptly.
This change may affect your planned schedule. There are several reasons why Lukla flights can be delayed or canceled, such as bad weather, traffic congestion at Kathmandu airport, runway management issues, and challenging terrain. If you’re planning to trek in the Everest region, it’s highly recommended to add an extra one or two days to your itinerary. This buffer time will be helpful in case of flight delays or cancellations, ensuring you can catch your international flight as planned.
